FCC: Issues: Programming Archive

Coalition Urges the FCC to Require Broadcasters to Archive Programming and Make Open for Public Inspection

A coalition including the Alliance for Better Campaigns, Benton Foundation, Campaign Legal Center and Norman Lear Center filed ex parte comments at the FCC urging the Commission to require broadcasters to record their programming as a means of helping determine whether stations are keeping their public interest obligations. The jointly filed comments argued that the programming archive would not be burdensome for the broadcasters and could be of great value in determining a stations' compliance with their obligations to serve the public interest. The FCC was also urged to require that the taped programming be placed in the public file.
