The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is responsible for conducting the nation's
tax collecting functions. In this regard, it oversees the activities of
educational organizations, social welfare groups, and political organizations
claiming exemption from Federal taxation. The Legal Center monitors and
provides comments on the IRS's enforcement of restrictions on campaign
intervention by Section 501(c) tax-exempt organizations and its operation of a
public disclosure database for contributions and spending by Section 527
political organizations.
