The Hinckley Institute Internship ProgramStarting in February of 2002, the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute will offer internships at the Washington, D.C. based Campaign and Media Legal Center. There will be a rigorous screening process - initially by Dr. Tim Chambless at the Hinckley Institute and ultimately by Kirk Jowers of the Legal Center. Upper-division communication and political science students interested in how the law intersects with public policy matters, and specifically campaign finance and/or media issues, will intern at the Center each semester and be provided a stipend for living expenses. The Center's students will be responsible for research in the areas of FCC and FEC policy, advisory opinions, trends in regulatory coverage and decision making, matters under review and the types of rulemaking conducted by both these federal regulatory bodies. Interns will research and help prepare press releases, popular magazine articles, op-eds, and academic and law review articles. The interns also will gain experience working with other non-profit organizations, attending press conferences, academic symposia, and other related efforts in the fields of campaign finance and media. At the end of each student's internship, the student will be responsible for a paper focusing on one of the issues of particular interest to them that they have come to learn about and research through their internship experience. |
