Cases: Minnesota v. Kelly: Intervenor / Amicus Filings

Minnesota v. Kelly

In the upcoming Supreme Court case Republican Party of Minnesota v. Kelly, the Court will hear arguments concerning the right of judicial candidates to make known their personal views on contentious issues which may someday come before them in court, should they win election to the bench. The case involves a First Amendment challenge to a Minnesota canon of judicial conduct which restricts such speech. In February of 2002 a collection of groups filed an amicus brief which seeks to "alert the Court to the potentially dangerous synergy between weakened canons and the growing influence of money in judicial elections."
