On the heels of Gov. Henry McMaster's proclamation asking South Carolinians to stand for the Super Bowl's national anthem comes a TV ad paid for by a patriotic-themed Ohio nonprofit featuring the governor's voice. Experts say his appearance does not violate election laws but certainly thumbs its nose at them. The TV spot, which will air before Sunday night's kickoff, starts with close-up shots of an American flag and a narrator talking about its meaning for freedom and military veterans.

The Government Integrity Fund, criticized in the past of being overly political, put together the ad after McMaster issued his proclamation Tuesday. (It came together so quickly, the fund could not find any free ad time in Columbia.)"This allows a dark money group to air a Super Bowl ad to support Gov. McMaster," said Brendan Fischer with the Campaign Legal Center in Washington, echoing the opinions of others. "They're exploiting a loophole here."
