Shutting down the case with no explanation of prosecutors’ decisionmaking would present “the worst of all possible worlds,” said Meredith McGehee, policy director of the Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan group that seeks greater disclosure of how money influences politics. On the one hand, she said, it feeds cynicism among those in the public who see politicians as operating above the law, while on the other deprives Gray of the opportunity to refute his accusers in open court as he considers a political comeback.
