March 3, 2006 -- Reform Groups Send Letter to Hill Urging Members to Vote No to H.R. 1606

On February 28, 2006, the Campaign Legal Center, Democracy 21, the League of Women Voters, Public Citizen and U.S. PIRG sent a letter to the House of Representatives urging them to vote against H.R. 1606. This bill "would open gaping soft money loopholes in the campaign finance laws by allowing members of Congress and political parties to use corrupting soft money to pay for Internet ad to support Members' campaigns."

The statement continues, saying, "Our groups strongly support the free speech rights of bloggers and believe that the Internet is an important and positive development for political disclosure and activities, and for increasing the number of small donors in politics."

H.R. 1606 was introduced in November 2005 on the Suspension calendar, but failed to get the 2/3 majority vote necessary to pass.
