Jun 27, 2006 -- FEC Replacement Bill Introduction: Statement of Trevor Potter, Campaign Legal Center President on H.R. 5676 and S. 3560

The creation of a new agency to replace the discredited Federal Election Commission (FEC) is long overdue. As numerous critics have charged, the FEC as currently structured has proven incapable of vigorously enforcing the country's campaign finance laws. Most recently, it has been the subject of a stinging series of rebukes from federal courts, which have found the Commission failed to adequately implement or enforce the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002.

The Campaign Legal Center unequivocally supports the Federal Election Administration Act of 2006 (H.R. 5676 and S. 3560) introduced by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Representatives Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Marty Meehan (D-MA). The legislation will introduce impartially to the process of enforcing the nation's election laws through the use of administrative law judges and at the same time will give the agency significant enforcement powers.

We strongly urge Congress to pass this legislation with alacrity for the good of the nation.
