Jan 12, 2007 -- Reform Groups Urge Senators to Support DeMint Amendment

Enclosed for your information is a letter reform groups sent earlier today to all Senators urging them to support the DeMint amendment providing for public disclosure of earmarks.

The reform groups include the Campaign Legal Center, Common Cause, Democracy 21, the League of Women Voters, Public Citizen and U.S. PIRG.

January 12, 2007

Dear Senator,

Our organizations strongly urge you to vote for the DeMint amendment to provide for public disclosure of the congressional sponsors of earmarks and to oppose efforts to weaken this amendment.

The DeMint earmarking proposal uses the same approach that was recently adopted by the House in broadly defining earmarks for purposes of disclosing to the public earmarks and their congressional sponsors. The proposal would require disclosure of earmarks in appropriations and tax bills, and in conference and committee reports. The amendment would also cover earmarks that go to federal entities as well as earmarks that go to private entities.

We urge you to vote for the DeMint amendment.
