Jul 31, 2007 -- House Lobbying Bill Passage: Statement of Meredith McGehee, Campaign Legal Center Policy Director

The reforms passed today in the House by an overwhelming margin are historic but also long overdue. It should not have been this difficult to deliver on promises to voters in the last election, but the House leadership, especially Nancy Pelosi and Chris Van Hollen, deserves credit for seeing the bill through once again against stiff opposition and business as usual heel draggers. This is only the first hurdle and the work will not be done until the measure is passed by the Senate

There is no credible excuse to oppose this legislation. The posturing currently going on in the Senate in opposition to this bill is at best misdirected and at worst an underhanded attempt to scuttle this entire process. The American people demanded better at the polls last November and they deserve better now.
