Aug 1, 2007 -- Reform Groups Urge Senators to Vote for Cloture on Lobbying and Ethics Reform Legislation

Enclosed for your information is a letter reform groups sent today urging Senators to vote for cloture on the lobbying and ethics reform legislation and to pass the legislation without any changes being made in the bill.

The reform groups include the Campaign Legal Center, Common Cause, Democracy 21, the League of Women Voters, Public Citizen and U.S. PIRG.

August 1, 2007

Dear Senator,

Our organizations strongly urge you to vote for cloture on the lobbying and ethics reform legislation which passed the House yesterday by a vote of 411 to 8. A vote against cloture is a vote to block enactment of this essential reform legislation.

Our organizations also strongly urge you to vote for the legislation without any changes being made in the bill and to send it directly to the President for his signature.

The process being used in the Senate is a substitute for a conference report because a Republican Senator blocked the Senate from going to conference on the legislation.

Senators would have to vote up-or-down on a conference report at this stage and similarly Senators should vote up-or-down on this legislation.

We strongly urge you to vote for cloture and for this critical reform legislation without any change being made in the bill.
