Sep 20, 2007 -- Civil Rights Groups Oppose Nomination of Hans von Spakovsky to FEC On September 20, 2007, the nation's oldest, largest , and most diverse civil and human rights coalition—the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights—sent a letter to each member of the Senate Rules Committee opposing the nomination of the Hans von Spakovsky to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The letter notes that von Spakovsky was "one of the architects of the Bush Administration's voter suppression efforts targeting minority voters." The letter notes that von Spakovsky's record of partisan enforcement of the voting rights laws while an official at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), and his pursuit of policies that systematically block access to the franchise for poor and minority voters make him unqualified to serve in such an important capacity."
The Leadership Conference's letter echoes concerns previously expressed on the Campaign Legal Center's blog. A vote on the nominations to the FEC is set for September 26 in the Senate Rules Committee. To read the full letter, click here. |
