Scam PAC “Campaign for a Conservative Majority” Defrauds Donors of $480,000

Date

On April 22, 2024, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) alleging that the political committee “Campaign for a Conservative Majority” (CCM), along with William Hartford and Anna Hartford, CCM’s treasurer and assistant treasurer, respectively, defrauded donors by fraudulently misrepresenting that CCM was raising funds for or on behalf of former President Donald Trump, and under the false pretense that CCM would use donations to support Trump and other Republican candidates. CCM appears to have contributed just 9% of the money it raised, roughly $42,000, on contributions to other federal candidates or committees, instead using most of the nearly $480,000 (most of which came from small donors giving less than $200) it raised both to enrich William and Anna Hartford and to pay for additional fundraising “robocalls.” CLC’s complaint further alleges that CCM and the Hartfords sought to cover up their fraudulent scheme by filing false and inaccurate disclosure reports with the FEC.
